I´ve been to the rainforest in Bolivia, Venezuela, Panama and Guatemala but Las Piedras exceeded all those in terms of biodiversity and sheer number of animals - Sheila Broughton, UK

Rainforest tours and research in the heart of the Tambopata region

We are a small ecofriendly company run by an English biologist and a Peruvian naturalist based in the Amazon rainforest of South East Peru. Our aim is to promote the sustainable use of the forest through genuine ecotourism, research and local educational programmes.

We offer Tours, Research Placements and Volunteer Placements to our research station called Las Piedras Biodiversity Station set in 4,000 hectares of primary rainforest located within a private reserve zone.We also organise Expeditions throughout the Tambopata region, an area internationally renowned for its high biodiversity.

Our Lodge

Tambopata Expeditions

Our lodge is built from local, sustainable materials and is designed in a traditional style in order to blend in with the surroundings. Our large recreational area or comedor contains a dining area, an area for relaxation with hammocks and a study zone complete with a well stocked library of identification books, rainforest information and scientific journals.

The lodge is surrounded by virgin rainforest and guests are often woken to the sounds of the Howler monkeys at dawn. Meals are prepared with organic produce from our small farm. View all our facilities

Expeditions

Macaws on the Collpa

The macaw collpa in Tambopata made famous by numerous documentaries and magazine articles is by far the most exciting place to visit along this stretch of river and due to its remote location has good wildlife viewing possibilities. We can also arrange tailor made expeditions if clients are interested in shorter or longer trips or are particularly interested in birdwatching or photography.

See our expedition page for more info.

Research

Jaguar caught in a camera trap

The River Piedras represents an exciting new area for the study of tropical biology. Piedras Biodiversity Station provides an ideal base for both long-term MSc and PhD studies or short term expeditions, undergraduate or amateur research projects.

One of our principle aims is to understand tropical rainforest ecology and to use the knowledge gained from research to promote conservation and education. Our committed and knowledgeable staff will provide you with support and assistance both before and during your stay. Visit our volunteering and research pages for more info...
